Austin Powers undoubtedly stole a few moves from Matt Helm, the swinging secret agent embodied by Dean Martin in four intentionally dopey late-'60s movies. The Silencers is the first and best of the bunch--but at that, it's barely a movie. Dino is first seen reclining in his automated bed, and he hardly wakes up for the remainder of the picture. (When a stunt double performs athletic moves in the action scenes, you rub your eyes at the impossibility of Martin moving that quickly.) And yet Matt Helm manages to stave off a nuclear disaster in the southwest desert, the nefarious plot of a Chinese archvillain (Victor Buono). The 007-style gadgets include exploding sportcoat buttons, plus the wet bar in Dino's station wagon--so he can gulp whiskey while he drives. The women are, of course, outrageously sexist playthings, although Stella Stevens remains the most adorable of '60s sex kittens. --Robert Horton

Whatever It Takes initially seems little more than another comedy with impossibly attractive teenagers trying to get into each other's pants. Ryan (Shane West) is a bit of a geek with eyes for the school sex bomb, Ashley (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), which induces cringing in his neighbor and best friend, Maggie (Marla Sokoloff), a cute intellectual girl. But popular jock Chris (James Franco) has his eye on Maggie, and he offers to help Ryan win Ashley if Ryan will help Chris woo Maggie. So begins a two-headed variation on Cyrano de Bergerac; Ryan composes soulful e-mails for Chris, and Chris advises Ryan to treat Ashley like dirt, which seems to be the only way to get her attention.

At first, neither finds it easy to change their ways; Chris comes on too strong, and Ryan is too nervous to be a jerk. But as they start to succeed, Ryan begins to see Maggie in a new light and wonders if he's pursuing the right girl. Which could all be very standard and shallow, but as the story unfolds the movie examines staying true to yourself and finding self-worth in surprisingly trenchant and unpreachy ways. Which is not to say that Whatever It Takes is high-minded--everyone's excessively good-looking and prone to wearing tight or revealing clothing, and there's a subplot about a kid who aspires to achieve school immortality through a topnotch prank. But the movie offers more than you might expect, which sets it apart from many of the recent swarm of teen flicks. --Bret Fetzer

Morning comes to a small town in Norway, where the lives of various characters intertwine in Chlorox, Ammonia and Coffee, a comedy-drama as unique and unpredictable as its title. Insightful and entertaining, it suggests a Robert Altman ensemble piece but directed with Dogma 95 edginess.

Among the dwellers is the singing and very pregnant Maria, expecting her second child with shiftless Erik, who's more interested in money and other women. Gunvor, Maria's mother-in-law and a notorious local shoplifter, gets thrown out of the vegetable store run by eccentric Jesus, and sells pills for young Elin, who works as Maria's babysitter. And that's not even getting into Iris, Elin's midwife mother, forever in love with trampoline-jumping police officer, Odd.

Director Mona J. Hoel keeps the many characters spinning with equal doses of humor and pain, all the while posing questions about the nature of life and love. Full of dreams and gentle irony, Chlorox, Ammonia and Coffee asks what the good is in the order of cleanliness when you don't have the courage to take risks.

Humiliated and depressed, Christian stays in Vegas and starts pursuing jobs as a chorus boy; he tells the documentarian that he's doing research for a screenplay.
